How The Next Generation of Leaders Grow Today
Video: Generation Next participants share stories about their renewed visions for the future
We feel that by leveraging our collective strengths as leaders we can benefit the community in stronger ways than simply sending a check in the mail. So we are producing a series of videos that tell the story of people making a positive impact in the world today.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
This question led us to the heart of the story of Amy Roberts and Erin Benko, facilitators of Generation Next programs throughout Iowa. This youth-focused Dale Carnegie Training experience is an oasis for teens in one of Des Moines' alternative learning centers. There the kids develop their visions for the future and while doing so gain college credit learning a host of skills—interpersonal, communications, leadership, and presentations—that help them build confidence and transition into a more successful adulthood.
Amy and Erin didn’t just show up and facilitate a 'check-the-box' training program. They met with each teen to learn their history, challenges at home and school, and hear their visions for the future.
From there they created an informal resource network, facilitated personalized coaching over eight weeks, and shared a set of proven principles to help guide the kids on their journey into the future.
There were times during the experience when the kids moved outside their comfort zone but being able to overcome their self-imposed limitations to pursue their dreams made it all worth it.
And by creating and sharing this film with Amy, Erin and the youths, they were able to reach out to the sponsors at Clarke County Development Corporation to secure future support.
We invite you to inspire other leaders by sharing this story across your social networks.
